Lung Cancer Awareness
Understanding Lung Cancer
Lung cancer is one of the most common and serious types of cancer worldwide. Early detection is critical for improving outcomes, yet lung cancer is often diagnosed at an advanced stage because early symptoms can be subtle.
Types of Lung Cancer
There are two main types: Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC), which accounts for approximately 80–85% of cases and includes subtypes such as adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell carcinoma; and Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC), which is less common but tends to grow and spread more quickly.
Risk Factors
Smoking is the leading cause, responsible for the vast majority of lung cancer cases. Other risk factors include exposure to secondhand smoke, radon gas, asbestos, and other carcinogens, as well as a family history of lung cancer. Notably, lung cancer can also occur in people who have never smoked.
Warning Signs
Symptoms may include a persistent cough that worsens over time, coughing up blood, chest pain, unexplained weight loss, hoarseness, and recurrent respiratory infections. If you experience any of these symptoms, consult a healthcare provider promptly.
