Pursed Lip Breathing
A Simple Technique for Better Airflow
Pursed lip breathing is a straightforward technique that slows down your breathing and helps keep your airways open longer. It is especially useful for people with obstructive lung diseases like COPD and emphysema.
How It Helps
In obstructive lung diseases, the airways tend to collapse during exhalation, trapping air in the lungs. Pursed lip breathing creates a small amount of back pressure that keeps the airways open, allowing more complete exhalation and reducing the sensation of breathlessness.
How to Practice
Step 1: Relax your neck and shoulder muscles.
Step 2: Inhale slowly through your nose for 2 counts (keep your mouth closed).
Step 3: Pucker or purse your lips as though you are about to whistle or gently blow out a candle.
Step 4: Exhale slowly and gently through your pursed lips for 4 counts — the exhalation should take at least twice as long as the inhalation.
When to Use It: Practise during activities that make you short of breath, such as climbing stairs, bending, or lifting. It can also be helpful during moments of anxiety or panic.
