Hi all,
When performing the 3L syringe FRC nitrogen washout check (simulating 0.5L tidal breaths for MBNW), we are getting very different results when using a filter vs without a filter. Without a filter (i.e just using a blue coupler), we get very close to the target of 2.6L. When we use a filter (to try to closer simulate pt testing), we struggle to get any of our devices to pass (fails high). With the target being 2.65L (accounting for the 50ml deadspace being added), we are getting values above 3L. I have worked across two hospitals in WA and noticed the same issue. I have had adapters custom made to ensure there is no leakage between the filter and the syringe, but nothing seems to fix the issue. I have raised the issue with MGC and their response is that the QC check is designed and tested without a filter only. I’m concerned that the filters could be causing artificially high results for patients. Has anyone else had this same issue?
Thanks, Finn
Just as an initial thought, did you account for the filter resistance? We use Medisoft and in the demographics screen you can tick/untick the resistance (on for patients and off for syringe QC).
